(RENO, NV)– On Tuesday May 24, the Nevada Wildlife Federation and the National Wildlife Federation will be handing off thousands of petitions to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, signed by Nevada residents calling on Congress to act on climate change. Nevadans are urging Congress to transition from fossil fuels and increase investments in renewable energy.

Nevada has the highest potential in the nation for solar energy production and ranks second in geothermal energy development potential. Currently, solar production is the leading producer of renewable energy in Nevada followed by geothermal and hydroelectric. In 2021, renewable energy resources accounted for 33% of Nevada's electricity production.

In the same year, a report shows that of the 883,148 acres currently leased on federal lands in Nevada for oil and gas development, there is development on only 20,647 of those acres, a scant 2%, while industry has locked up over 862,000 acres.

“As the nation faces record breaking fuel prices, Nevada has the unique opportunity to set the example of how states can harness the potential of renewable energy resources. Renewable energy has the benefit of supplying Nevada’s residents and visitors with an energy resource that is stable, reliable, and largely immune to global conflicts.” said Russell Kuhlman, Executive Director of the Nevada Wildlife Federation.

“The Nevada Wildlife Federation looks forward to working with Senator Cortez Masto and the rest of Nevada’s Congressional delegation to invest in climate change solutions by expanding our nation’s renewable energy options.” said Natasha Majewski, consultant with the Nevada Wildlife Federation.
