Reno, NV — On Tuesday, September 20th at 11:00AM, a coalition of Nevada organizations and leaders announced the launch of the new “Solutions for Pollution” campaign via a webinar.

The Solutions for Pollution campaign, is a broad coalition of over 150 environmental, climate, public health, environmental justice, and clean energy organizations working together to ensure that the Biden administration uses all existing tools to set the strongest possible standards to drive down climate pollution, advance justice, and protect our lands, water, people and wildlife.

“One of the categories in the Solutions for Pollution Action Plan that we’re especially excited about is appliance efficiency standards, which are one of the most effective ways to reduce utility bills, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and boost public health.” said Christi Cabrera, Deputy Director for the Nevada Conservation League. “Gas appliances fill our homes with many of the same pollutants as car exhaust — increasing the risk of childhood asthma and other respiratory problems. Helping homes become pollution-free with more efficient appliances powered by renewable energy will improve air quality, protect public health, and make progress in combating climate change.”

“Our focus with this campaign is with the soot and smog air quality standards. Over 56 million Latinos live in the 15 worst urban areas for ground level ozone.” said Andres Almanza of the Hispanic Access Foundation. “Latinos are twice as likely to go to the emergency room for asthma and the CDC estimates that 48% of all Hispanic Americans live in counties that frequently violate ground level ozone standards. We are excited about engaging in smog air quality standards because we want to see regulations that enforce and limit and protect our people as well as everyone in these urban areas.”

“We're standing up for everyone's voice to make sure that every last breath has a voice at the table.” said Jennifer Cantley from Mom’s Clean Air Force. “As the mother, my attention was brought to what these fine particles can do to little lungs, let alone anybody else that is already suffering with asthma and respiratory issues.”

“Every study that comes out shows that particulate pollution is more deadly and more damaging than we ever thought, something around 45,000 deaths in the year.” said Mark Peckham of the Environmental Defense Fund. “ It's really an environmental justice issue because the communities that are built in close proximity to industrial areas really take the brunt of this form of pollution and it's something that through tightening up the EPA standards and holding our holding industry to clear standards, it's been estimated by EPA scientists we could save over 12,000 lives a year.”

“This campaign will give Nevadans a stronger voice in supporting climate action.” said Russell Kuhlman, Executive Director, Nevada Wildlife Federation. “The U.S. Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act that made historic investments in clean energy solutions, restoring carbon-sequestering natural infrastructure, and safeguarding wildlife habitat. Now is the time for Nevadans to speak up to ensure that these investments are successfully implemented.”
